German   -   Graubrot (Brown Bread)   adapted from German Cooking

  • 1 1/2 Cups Flour
  • 1 Cup Rye Flour
  • 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped Walnuts -- Optional
  • 1/2 Cup Raisins -- Optional
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 2 Cups Buttermilk
  • 1/2 Cup Molasses
  • 2 Teaspoons Baking Soda
Directions Grease a loaf pan. Combine all the flours, sugar, walnuts, raisins and salt. In another bowl, combine milk, molasses and baking soda. Stir well. Add the milk mixture to start to bubble. Add it to the flour mixture. Stir well and pour into the loaf pan. Bake for 1 hour at 325 degrees. Remove and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Serve.
